If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. ~Albert Einstein

Week 2: The Big Picture

Now that we've had some time to get to know one another it's time to jump into the content. So this week we are kicking off our very first unit with States of Matter. Right now our focus is to examine the general nature of matter. In a few weeks, we will get to the nitty gritty of matter by looking at the atoms.

The States of Matter lesson is a great way to review something we already know before taking it to the next level. Prior to eighth grade, you learned that there are three states of matter. This year we will introduce a fourth state. We will not only look at matter in the three states, but we will take a more investigative approach to learning about the motion of the particles and the changes between states.

This lesson will conclude with our first formative assessment. Don't worry though as I have a few special things planned. Some of the highlighted activities include the following:

* Human particles
* States of matter jenga
* Plickers review

Now on the subject of rituals and routines, I will be introducing another aspect of the class: music! At the start of each class, music will be played while we are getting ourselves situated for learning. I'll let you know what the songs are indicating. This week all the alarms that sound will also cue certain activities. This week, I'll review and practice what we are to do when we hear each sound. In no time you'll be able to transition through the period without my verbal cues.

That's it for this week!
